How Can I Avoid Negative Criticism?

Do you really want to avoid negative criticism? Think about it.

In this text, by saying negative criticism I mean criticism made with bad disposition. For example, a person who makes a remark with the intense to hurt.

Well, criticism can be very efficient. Actually, even negative criticism can be a good thing. Because no matter the motives of the criticism you can still benefit from it. Let's see how.

Before we further analyze the topic, one thing we need to be aware of is that we never really know what people thought when they made the remark. And certainly, we can't know what their intentions were.

But how many times we say something with a different purpose to the one that it was perceived? That happens because we may think of something else at the time of the remark and so it takes a different form and as a result, a different meaning. So, if it happens to us, it can happen to others, too.

There are situations where the hostile behaviour is so overt we are certain the person doesn't like us. Here is the trick: The truth is that if we haven't done something REALLY bad to them they don't dislike us, per se. They may be jealous of us (which is their sense of insecurity; not that we are worth dislikeness), they may feel embarrassed around us because they are attracted to us, and so they express it as hostility or they may have had a bad day, altogether.

Let's study a real-life example:

Sheryl, a protege of mine, came to me with the presenting problem of feeling that everyone was judging her. After we did a few of the techniques I use, she felt better but at the same time we applied the following strategy:

When someone would make a negative comment - no matter their intention - she would take notice of it and turn it into a strength. By improving.

So, if someone told her that her stew was missing salt she would make her stew saltier.
