How often do we want to achieve something? how frequently do we want to set goals? I would say very often. Sometimes we manage to set the goal and achieve it, sometimes we achieve it harder and sometimes we don't achieve it at all. But even then, during our journey, we may have gained more than what we would if we had achieved that first goal.

Make Up Your Mind

First, we need to have a motivation for our goal; either a better CV/Resume, a promotion at work or just because we love that specific goal. But it has to make you feel happy when you achieve it. At the same time, always, picture the outcome so that you can retain that momentum and the drive to keep trying until you succeed.

Specify

It is a good practice to write down our goal since it acts as a tangible reminder but also as a tangible goal. Be specific about what is the goal. What is the ideal time-frame you want to get there, how it will look and feel like when it is accomplished and how you will benefit from it.

Break It Down

It feels easier when we break down our goals in small steps so that we feel that fufillment on each step. No matter how big or small the journey or the trip, split it into small short goals. When you drive a week-long roadtrip, you drive little every day and make small stops. Same applies here.

Start from Somewhere

Even if we don't know where or how to start, the very step of just finding where or how to start is a road to our goal and eventually to our success.

Stay Motivated

Many times the road is going to be frustrating and difficult and that is why we need to keep up the good work and stay motivated.

A way to do that is by rewarding ourselves every time we reach a 'checkpoint' (the small step we talked about earlier). You can find out what the reward can be: a treat, a purchase of some sort, a good word to yourself, anything really that gives you that feeling of achievement.

Another way to remain motivated is by speaking to a friend or a relative about our goal. That will make us feel accountable and it will oblige us, in a way, to keep going.

Enjoy It

No matter what, enjoy the journey. There is this greek poem called Ithaka - inspired by Oddyssey - which says that ''as you set out for Ithaka, hope your road is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery''. It is the journey that is worth it and not the goal, itself.

By the way, it is a good affirmation to keep reading one or two verses of that poem to keep you going!
