To properly work on our improvement it is a good practice to break down, in smaller 'portions', our bigger aim.

Let's say for example, when I wake up in the morning to go for a weekend getaway out in the country. Let's say, I live in Brighton, UK and I want to go to Haywards Heath to meet a friend and walk in its beautiful countryside!

If I go to the train station, normally, I will know already I am going to Haywards Heath. If I do not know where I'm going there are the following options:

a) I will get stuck at the station wondering where I want to go,

b) I will get a random ticket to whatever destination.

c) I will not know what I am doing there.

The same goes with our personal development. One or more goals make things easier and manageable.

The following real-life example shows us the functionality.

John came to me with the presenting problem of social phobia. He was lost not only because it made him feel handicapped but because he didn't know where to start from.

But the main problem of social phobia is low self-esteem. And that is the goal here: to improve self- confidence.

So we broke down the 'big image' of low self-esteem into smaller more manageable ones as follows:

a) He can get out of the house without feeling he is being observed by others.

b) He can get in his car and drive, confidently, in the city without feeling observed.

c) He can go on a date without the social stress.

d) He can look for a job without the stress of the - imaginary -job's environment full of people looking at him and watching every movement he makes.

e) He can go to small party.

f) He can join a group of two persons.

The list can go on for as long as you specify small aims you want to achieve while gradually you are building the bigger aim, which is self-confidence and eventually elimination of social phobia.
