How Can We Become Responsible

One of the first things I emphasize to my proteges is self-respect. It is there where everything starts and ends.

You don't need anyone's approval to feel self-sufficient. If you do, it means you are not trying to be self-sufficient but 'other-sufficient'. Sufficiency comes from within.

People can always find something good or bad to comment about us. Not to mention that we also could have made or do negative remarks in a bad way. And that is sadder: we complain about everyone else except for our own behaviour. But if we change ourselves, then when the world will change. So, we manage to see the splinter in our fellow human beings' eyes but not the nail in our own eye.

And here is where responsibility comes in. What is the difference between a child and a grown-up? Responsibility. A child has their parents or guardians to look after them and decide for them. But adults decide for themselves. Insufficency comes when we are not courageous enough to accept the consequences of our actions and the flaws which we move on with.

You see it everywhere: In professionals, in parents, in many people. Of course and luckily, not all have decided to be observers of life rather than live in it. But it is many. And sometimes enough to obstruct a good quality of life for the responsible people.

Case Study

Terry stepped in my practice with an overwhelming feeling. He was a broker, a husband and a father and he reached his breaking point. He stopped making decisions and left it all to others whenever he could.

We worked on his past, and many facts in his life, appeared to be hard to remember. But the techniques we used helped in that direction. We found past experiences which traumatized his self-image and self-confidence.

After a number of sessions he re-evaluated himself with a fresh mind and was able to stand on his feet and feel confident, happy and satisfied with his life.
