Thinking About The Past

Thinking about the past is a tendency most of us have. It is safe to say that in the past, we have done things we are proud of and things we are not proud of; choices we are happy about and choices we are not happy about.

For most of us, the bad things are the ones that haunt us more. We don't like it but there we are, we delve into the inappropriate - according to us - past.

I say 'according to us', simply, because for someone else our choices we think they are horrible they may think they are excellent or so-and-so. Same applies to someone else's negative, past decisions: we may find them excellent or average. Thus, it is very subjective; and that is why we need not feel guilt or bad about them.

But why do we delve into the unwanted past and stick to it? It is the same answer that goes with 'why we underestimate ourselves'.

Many times, it is because we learned to do so by our environments or the media, but not exclusively. It is also a matter of conscience guidance: Conscience comes to us and judges us according to our personal beliefs.

And, now, let us step into whether that is a good or a bad thing. Well, the answer is quite simple: Reflecting on actions or non-actions that you have left behind and exercise critique - as long as it does not put you down - is good if you can draw positive clues and lessons, so as to use them in your present or future; but if you only create permanent guilt, it doesn't help at all. On the contrary, it is devastating for you.

The good news is that YOU get to choose how to handle the 'visit' of the past decisions and actions. Many people have adopted the habit of self-pity and they turn every single memory against them by thinking they are victims. You may be a victim in some cases but, eventually, it will benefit you if you think positive.

Hence, a beneficial affirmation would be: 'At the time, I had a mindset which led me make that decision of which I ma not proud of. I am not bound to my past (or I am free from my past) and I can make better decisions, now'.

What we have left behind cannot be changed, for what it's worth, but it can teach us lessons. Meaningful lessons. Leverage the past to your advantage. Make this positive choice, today, with a new mindset.
